Journal Week 9 – Interactive Fiction

I thought the games were generally quite entertaining even if they were a little cumbersome to control. They all seem to place a great emphasis on player freedom giving the affordance that the player can perform (type) any action. Unfortunately, a lot of actions don’t work or at least don’t result in the desired effect which can get very frustrating after a while.

The main appeal seems to be the discovery element of the game and so the replayability really just depends on how many novel paths there are… (Note, if the content is only slightly different for each action then the player will get bored very quickly…)

These games really depend on having good quality content and the other mechanics seem to be so simple that they blur the line between being a game and a piece of art.
